Nicholas II’s only redeemable quality was the fact that he’s actually a good family guy.
Other than that, he was basically, incompetent. Both in political and military affairs. Foreign or domestic.
I mean, he underestimated the Japanese and got his army and his navy beaten severely by the Japanese. If not because of Theodore Roosevelt’s intervention, the Russians would’ve endure worse post-war treaties.
And then he personally led the Russian army in WW2 which led the Germans to advanced deeper into the Russian Empire’s territory.
That’s two consecutive L’s in foreign affairs.
How about civilian affair? Well he did cause 1905 Revolution and his negligence caused the Bloody Sunday. And while he won in the sense that he successfully stay in the throne, he didn’t make it during the 1917 Revolution.
Russia did experienced an industrial revolution during his tenure, but more because of Sergei Witte’s policies.
But still, I don’t think he and his family deserved to be brutally murdered by the Bolsheviks. I mean, exiled would be more proper.
