      Cecil Williams was a gay English–South African theatre director, world war 2 veteran, and anti-apartheid activist who assisted Nelson Mandela during his period in hiding. While it is unclear what conversations took place between the two of them, many historians believe that Cecil Williams ultimately planted the seeds of supporting LGBTQ rights within Mandela’s way of thinking.
