But fresh popped popcorn smothered in Krusty Brand Imitation Butter is the only reason to still go to the movies…

    2. when i worked at one we had pre popped popcorn but ours came in what i called the elephant condom, and we kept those for far to long for my liking.

    3. That’ll be 1 million dollars sir, would you like to round up for charity?

    4. Bleh. I worked at a theatre many years ago. At the end of the night we’d bag up the extra popcorn and use it the next morning. I guess at least it was fresh-ish, and didn’t come pre-popped? lol

This is why I’m still smuggling snacks into the theater. Nothing slaps like an illicit costco hotdog hidden in my giant purse.

    6. Damn whats the street value on a brick of popped corn these days ?? They’re just leaving it out !

My dad worked in a movie theatre in the 1940s—the popcorn was pre-popped then.

I worked at a movie theater when I was younger and they’d use pre made popcorn out of garbage bags.

I did not get scars from working the popper and cleaning it and all these other character building experiences at a movie theater for the kids doing big it now to have pre-popped corn.

All joking aside, it kind of makes me sad I loved working at the theater when I was a teenager, I have so many fun and crazy stories from that time.

I don’t think they’re supposed to have that on the floor.

I’m not a rocket scientist or anything, but I’m pretty sure pre-popped popcorn is just kernels.

This is post-popped popcorn…or maybe just, ya know…popcorn.

How can this be more economical than popping them fresh. This seems ridiculous for a movie theatre

    13. As someone who used to work at a cinema they 1) took away the dome shaped slushie lids because we kept filling it past the rim 2) started selling popcorn boxes with lids so we couldn’t fill that up past the rim either 3) had a go at us regularly for using the button on the drinks tap for topping up drinkings so people got more than a half full soda lol

That stuff is so nasty compared to fresh popped. And you’re paying top dollar for the stuff.

I work at a theatre, if it’s any consolation in my experience the giant pre-popped bags are usually only taken out during a colossal rush when we literally can’t pop any more fresh batches fast enough.

    16. This is bizarre to me as someone who spent the better part of a decade in the theater industry.

Popped corn takes up so much more volume to deliver and you need to worry about spoilage.

Even in a theater with 16 screens, you had a huge downtime between runs that both the staff and poppers would sit idle. You also have a ramping up of attendance through the day to pop early and serve later.

I can’t imagine how this is worth while unless you don’t have enough physical space for poppers to keep up with demand.

Just the recycled popcorn from sweeping the floor during the Minecraft movie.

My highschool bf worked at the movies. Its was never prepopped but they did let employees bring home big bags like this if there was extra at the end of the night. Could be that?

My god the enshitification is real….. at this point corporations are actively trying to give the finger to customers

    20. I worked at a movie theater for quite a while when I was a teen. Sometimes they would have me spend the day upstairs in this room with the popper and a bunch of huge, tubular plastic bags. Everything is pre-measured and the popper was this metal cauldron looking thing hanging over a big glass box. You would pour in the oil, popcorn kernels and spices (mostly salt) into the cauldron and push a button. I would spend 8 hours popping corn and filling the bags, laying them in stacks and rows along the back wall of the room. That would be enough for about a week of sales.

How the fuck does this make sense. Run some numbers with me please:

      (1) Dried Corn Kernels last a Jumanji amount of years in storage. Post Corn becomes soggy after 15 minutes.

      (2) Dried Corn Kernels have a higher weight/volume ratio, which means that the transportation costs would be smaller (in bulk).

      (3) You can find Dried Corn Kernels and butter even under your doormat. How many factories are there for Post Corn across your city/state ?

      (4) Fresh PopCorn makes clients go Awooga. Styrofoam makes clients go into depression.

So I am asking very calmly and very genuinely. Why? Is the machine cleaning/power consumption for fresh pop corn that high? Is it that much more expensive to hire +1 high school student for weekend rush? WHEN DOES THE ENSHITIFICATION STOP
