The Anglo Saxon conquest 500 years earlier was a tragedy of the entire archipelago

      Worst thing to happen.

J.R.R. Tolkien had the right opinion of the 1066 Norman Conquest.

They don’t like it when you point out there hasn’t been an English king in England since 1066

Harold had no claim to the throne. He had no blood connection to the House of Wessex or House of Denmark. William’s children were descended from Alfred the Great through Matilda. William was related to Edward through Emma of Normandy and the House of Denmark through Gunnora.

Harold should have just backed William at the Witan. Harold would have continued to rule England in William’s name. William would have gone back to Normandy (as in real life). The English nobility, navy and army would have remained intact and William would have had no reason or incentive to hand over their land over to Normans.

Alternately, Harold should have backed Edgar and William would have gone to plan B and Mary one of his sons into the family (which happened in real life with Margaret). So Harold fucked up with his coup.

We know William had support of a lot of the English army after Hasting. We often see the meme about how Saxon peasant prepared the meat and the Normans ate it leading to two tiers of words being used. Well most English words today and in Middle English for weapons, armour and some ranks (like Knight, Baron, Earl) remained Germanic and was not replaced by the Norman French ones. The Fyrd was still being used in the 1100s as well.

      Harold fucked up
