At some point during the Greek Archaic Period (possibly during the reign of King Charilaus of Sparta), the Spartans consulted the Oracle of Delphi about their planned invasion of Arcadia (the region north of Laconia, where Sparta is). The Oracle gave a cryptic response which the Spartans interpreted as meaning they shouldn’t try to invade all of Arcadia, but focus on the city-state of Tegea. This was shortly after the Spartans conquered Messenia and enslaved the entire population, so they planned to do the same thing to the Tegeans, even bringing large amounts of shackles with them for this purpose. However the Tegeans defeated the Spartans, taking many prisoners, and they enslaved those prisoners with the very shackles they had brought with them. This battle received the ironic name of the Battle of the Fetters.

That was considerate of them.
