This was a recurring bit on a Japanese comedy show I regularly watched in the 2000s called Haneru Tobira (which means Jumping Door, HaneTobi for short). The comedians dressed up like grasshoppers (kirigirisu in Japanese) and competed in silly challenges where they tried to “just barely” (girigiri) complete the challenge. Each time they completed the challenge, it got more difficult. The bit was called Girigirisu, a portmanteau of the Japanese words for grasshopper and just barely.
My favorite bit from that show involved the comedians dressing up as different sterotyped nationalities and trying to pick up and eat progressively more slippery foods off of a sushi conveyor with their chopsticks. If they failed, a bunch of macho guys would march in and spin their chairs around really fast until they were dizzy.
