    1. Arent those interpreters also supposed to repeat everything mouthing the words so that ppl can read off of that?

    2. Its almost like there are language certificates that validate the authenticity….

    3. Derlyn Roberts, who has been convicted of fraud on several occasions, bought her low-grade sign language abilities to a press conference hosted by Tampa police last Wednesday.

Tampa police Public Information Officer Steve Hegarty admitted to allowing Roberts into the press conference after she offered her services. He admitted he clearly didn’t ask the woman enough questions. Police are still baffled as to how Roberts knew of the press conference and its location.

This happens a lot. The highest profile case was probably Nelson Mandela’s funeral.

In all fairness, it’s Florida. Everyone has a fraud history.

Years ago, I saw a story on the news about this recurring problem.

Apparently, most ASL interpreters are volunteers not paid professionals, which would be the case for spoken languages.

As such they are rarely vetted as the organizers forget everything else about you after they know you will work for free.

They don’t ask for certification or do criminal background checks, especially since that due diligence takes time and often these news conferences are put together in a matter of hours not days.

I remember when former South African president Nelson Mandela past away, the interpreter at his funeral was disovered to be a fraud too.

    8. Why do I keep seeing posts with some sort of accent – above the letter A in the title?

*”Fifty-one hours ago, zero 12 22 (indecipherable) murder three minutes in 14 weeks ago in old (indecipherable) murder four five 55,000 plea 10 arrest murder bush (indecipherable) three age 24″*

    11. I have a very hard time understand some people’s thought process. Is it possible they really thought they would get away with this? Maybe they just don’t think far enough ahead. Living in the moment with no thoughts of future consequences?
