Those people can do whatever they want obviously they can’t go back in time, the thing that amaze me that how do many people go out of their way to generalized the past and just go ” everyone in past was sad and miserable bro” … ofcourse i agree modern times is better but just saying .

    2. BasedAustralhungary on

I respect the grind of some people to be devoted of living the experience of having three kids, seven other kids that died, dying at their thirties due to the plague and getting their wife raped by the local abbot.

    3. Nah, 9 to 5 is shitty but definitely better. Would go medieval peasant instead of early industrial worker with no rights and turns up to 16 hours all year long tho

    4. Leprechaun_lord on

One nuance that people forget is that the quality of a peasant’s life varied so widely depending on time and place. You can certainly find some examples of peasants with surprisingly high quality of life. However, there are also examples of peasants experiencing some of the worst conditions possible.

    5. Goes to medieval times, cuts himself with ancient farming equipment because he’s never worked in a farm, dies of infection as modern medicine does not exist yet

    6. Easy-Musician7186 on

You know the medival peasents might be somewhat nice if they are not in their witch burning phase (you might trigger one though), the shitload of diseases that you are not used to will kill you in no time tough.

look at the space behind him. No wonder he doesn’t appreciate modern comfort, dude practically lives in a dungeon of his own creation. Create an environment that makes you happy and you’ll be okay with modern life. I work a 9-5 (pm to am) for below median salary but what little money I make I put into my home to make it comfy and peaceful. And my mental health and contentment are better for it.

    8. I get where he’s coming from. I obviously couldnt live without modern luxuries and I would probably have had a miserable life as a peasant, seeing as i’m underweight and generally fragile.

That said, the highs would probably hit as hard as the lows, can you imagine how it would feel to finish tending an acre of field with your village at the start of spring, sharing stories of faraway Lands you might not even be sure actually exist around a warm fire.

    9. TSSalamander on

Yeah so medival pesants basically worked at all times actually. You aren’t relaxing all the time you have so much work to do just to survive. you work mostly for yourself and your family but like what? You work to survive day in day out.

It’s not even about rights or gender for me. The first thing I think of is indoor plumbing and medical care. Like sure I will face misogyny but also I need a bathroom.

    11. You can be critical of capitalist exploitation and alienation of workers without advocating for literal peasantry.

    12. socialistRanter on

Yeah you take a break from working on your Lord’s lands but now you have to maintain your own plot and a series of other chores that would take up most of your day.

I can take a shower everyday and the washing machine does most of the work in cleaning clothes.

    13. Nopetynope12 on

I really, really despise takes like this. Yes, peasants got holidays. They also got bubonic plague. It wasn’t a good time.

    14. lobthelawbomb on

The funny thing about this attitude is that farming still exists. You can go to the rural south right now and find an old farmer who will let you inherit his farm in exchange for working it for the farmer. The fact that these peasant worshippers don’t do that shows you how serious they are.

    15. Peasant ? Hell no, I am going back to the wild west to get poisoned by the bar keep

    16. GinAndDumbBitchJuice on

Oh HELL no. Just because I’m built to survive famine doesn’t mean I want to try.

    17. PatchyWhiskers on

You can live like a mediaeval peasant if you want. Buy a plot of land, build a shack there, and work at subsistence farming. And unlike a mediaeval peasant, if you get a famine you can pack it in rather than starve.

    18. diepoggerland2 on

Nah I kinda think I get the concept. Ive not, seen this video so idk if this is his point but hear me out. While we’ve come a long way in terms of technology, living standards, social equality, food security, ect., medieval peasants had a very sifferent relationship with labour. They mostly did a bit of every task needed to live in rural life, with the exception of a few truly skilled trades like smithing, while working something physical and rewarding all day that they directly reaped the products of. They took relatively common breaks, as not every farm task for the day can be done in one go, and usually built relatively strong community during those breaks and rare days off. Modern labour is, while more productive, much more specialized (which can feel boring and repetitive) and usually much more disconnected from anything it actually produces. Theres not room a lot of the time for that feeling of community either, or feeling rewarded witb what youve physically literally built or grown. I understand wanting to go back to that relationship with work, labour, and one’s coworkers and neighbors.

YEah, I prefer the concept of contracting diseases from living in the same building as livestock. Or contract diseases from doctors that refuse to wash their hands until the mid 19th century.

    20. These people somehow miss the fact that medieval peasants worked from sunrise to nightfall to keep themselves alive…

    21. Mammoth_Western_2381 on

Whenever someone says ”medieval peasants had more holidays than working days/Hunter-gatherers only worked 20-hours-per-week” the sky loses a star.

    22. Angel_OfSolitude on

Congrats, enjoy your sun up to sun down work. Hopefully you don’t have too many crop failures before winter.

    23. porcupinedeath on

Bros never had to hand wash his clothes or subsist off the crops he had to grow himself all while paying taxes at threat of a wet crypt or death

    24. Medieval peasant represents and absolutely huge variety of experiences over a huge amount of chronology, geography and economy.

    25. When your liege decides to start some bullshit war so now you’re not seeing your family for 10 months

    26. breciezkikiewicz on

The only pro I can think of is you can ditch your family or murder a bunch of people, walk to the next town 50 miles away and start a new life.

    27. I’m dicking around on Reddit during my 9-5 right now. Couldn’t do that in 12th century France

    28. markpreston54 on

as miserable in times for my 9 to 630, some times to 10, job be, I will not trade my life for being a medieval king

    29. HlopchikUkraine on

I would also prefer being transferred into medieval world if I was asked, even if I forget my modern skills and knowledge of the time after time I am set at. But only if patterns in my knowledge remain and knowledge of modern languages is transferred into knowledge of similar languages of the time. So I would be literate.
I am vaccined so I have resistance to some sicknesses + patterns in knowledge would help to avoid dangers. If I am set in 15th century -I would know about previous times, so that is a leverage. I am a big and strong guy with healthy appearance and I am smart.
So I may rise in social status. I am young so I have time. Other peasants would respecf me.

But if I had to be born as medieval peasant, then I would choose modern days, no second thoughts. Hell no!

There is no better or worse period, there is yours and not your times. And people tend to romanticize.

As we in Ukraine say:”Good [place] is where you aren’t” meaning that you only see pros and ignore cons.

      English peasant – raided frequently.
HRE peasant – arguably, has the most privileges.
Polish peasant – basically a slave.
Balkan peasant – raided by both Christians and Muslims.
Scandinavian peasant – the one who raids.

Historia Civilis did a good video “Work”. It’s worth looking into for this kind of thing.

    32. Those people forget that they have to do all the work that now is done by technology or just by supermarkets, cut your own firewood, wash your own clothes, heat up your water over a fire, make your own clothes, and that was done after your normal work on your farm.

There is a reason market day was a thing because you spend the whole day going to the market buy everything for a week and haul it back.
