Even Americans back then were confused by the 2 different Roosevelt families

In 1932 as Franklin Roosevelt was running for president, [Edith Roosevelt](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edith_Roosevelt), widow of former president Theodore Roosevelt, received hundreds of letters in the mail congratulating her son on his bid. There was just one problem, Franklin Roosevelt WAS NOT Edith Roosevelt’s son. FDR was TR’s 5th cousin from the distant Hyde Park branch of the Roosevelt clan, Edith and her lot were the Oyster Bay variety. This stung, as both families were at odds ever since the 1924 New York governor’s race, where FDR backed Al Smith against Theodore III, who WAS Edith’s son. Had TR #3 won that race, it’s possible he, and not Franklin, would’ve been a future president. Edith and much of the Oyster Bay branch promptly campaigned for Herbert Hoover against FDR, as miffed that they were.

The Roosevelts were basically the original Kardashians, but with more trust-busting and better hats.

They were actually were different branches of the same family.
