Context: The Dreyfus Affair (1894–1906) was a political crisis in France sparked by the wrongful conviction of Jewish artillery officer Alfred Dreyfus for treason. Key events included his 1894 arrest and public degradation, the 1896 discovery of the real spy, Émile Zola’s 1898 “J’accuse…!” article, and his 1906 exoneration, exposing deep antisemitism and dividing France

So bizarre the French Third republic just chugged along after this.

There deep desire to eat Baguettes and fine dining kept them going I guess.

Someone made a meme for this one long ago that I loved.

      The Political Positions:

      Meline: “Dreyfus was a traitor!”

Brisson: “Dreyfus was not a traitor!”

Drumont: “Who cares? He was a filthy Jew, that’s all you need to know!”

    4. “We support (insert political thing)!”

      “We hate (Insert political thing)!”

      “I AM ADOLF HITLER!!”

      For the record:

~~Albert~~ Alfred Dreyfus pleaded guilty to avoid continued incarceration, but was eventually exonerated and recommissioned as an artillery officer in the French army. He went on to serve in the First World War.

For all the shit he endured, Albert Dreyfus was an officer and a gentleman.

Also a bit of context I have been given about Dreyfus is that he was from the Alsace Lorraine zone, which was sus, and he MIGHT have known the secret formula for some anti recoil gun. So a reasonable person might be like “I don’t trust that mf” but he was actually innocent the whole time and they made him sit in some kinda terrifying hell on earth jungle jail
