    1. The National Park Service is one of the good ones. I don’t believe I’ve ever encountered a surly US Park Ranger. No matter at a visitors center, a guide or in the bush, they always seem helpful and seem to care about their job.

The US Forest Service is another good one. Those wildland firefighters put in some WORK, I’ll tell you what!

I’d argue OSHA has their heart in the right place but they are severely restricted on what they can do to enforce meaningful change. I’m a little surprised the current administration hasn’t shut them down entirely yet.

    3. Get OSHA off of this list! Maybe they technically help but doing 999 bad things and one good thing is a ratio that would get most government agencies on this list

OSHA is slow as hell though. I sent a report to them after a coworker of mine got trapped in a freezer at a fast food joint they worked at (they were in there for twenty minutes with a broken emergency door lock in the inside before someone let them out) and they never showed up. Only good thing is that the place shut down due to low customer numbers.

Medicare. Lots of grumbling about this part of govt, but there is no way to make a profit off elderly and sick people. Medicare allows a way for hospitals to- who are required to provide this care by federal law- provide this care without going bankrupt. It would be better if it were fully funded with price controls to stop the price gouging present in all industries, but Medicare is great. Just imagine what we would have without it.

    6. Sorry but there are so many that do amazing work. Sure they all have their flaws but they were created after a need. The real problem is people don’t understand their purpose and just believe whatever propaganda. USAID is a perfect example. You can spend a fraction of your budget across the globe on outreach which does untold amounts of good. Some stupid stories come out saying they are just handing out money and condemn and then people cheer when it’s dismantled like idiots.

HSI, or homeland security investigation unit, which is attached as an agency to ICE for reasons that dont make any sense, does some truly incredible stuff. Those dudes are who you want doing the job they do, and they are consummate professionals. They will throw themselves into the worst this species has to offer to bring true evil to justice, and this is coming from someone with a deep dislike of the federal government. These people identified a brick from a house in a CP video, and used it to track the perpetrator down. That’s how dedicated they are.

This is bullshit. They all provide a service. The irs does too. If we didn’t have it, how would we have money to spend on anything. But no one will say it’s “one of the good ones”.

    10. We’re just going to not mention the EPA trying to make sure corporations don’t poison our water and ruin the earth indefinitely?

There are alot of obscure government agencies that play hidden roles in our lives, whether directly or indirectly. The problem is the bureaucratic nightmare and politicization/partisan tom foolery that theyre hampered by. NPS gets all the glory, but theyre a small part in conservation within the department of the interior

    13. If I want my package to move more than 5 miles in a week then I’ll deliver it by bike.

    14. There are quite a few others that are less visible but just as important! The FAA is literally the only thing that keeps planes from falling out the sky. The EEOC (up until recently at least) helps protect federal workers from discrimination. The FDA makes it so we can eat food without worrying if it has toxic chemicals in it.

This comment section has collectively acknowledged that almost all federal agencies are really quite beneficial, at least when they aren’t being hamstrung by assholes. Anyone who wants to defund branches of the government is a naive fool. Except the non coast guard/national guard branches of the military, we could live with a little less military.

US QPark Rangers are the good ones ngl. Camped at Yellowstone last summer aond one spent 20 mins showing my kid how to ID animal tracks instead of just kicking us out. Who’s your fave lowkey hero org?

I know th MNDNR is pretty well run. Even if they are dirty greeny pants

    18. The vast majority of government agencies actually help people. Almost all of the issues are funding and staffing, not desire or intention.

OSHA inspected the print shop I worked in. We got a $25,000 fine for having an “improper waste filtration system” and given 6 months to install a new, OSHA approved, system.. 6 months and almost $175,000 later we passed the follow-up inspection. During our next inspection a year later we got a $25,000 fine for having an “improper waste filtration system”. Said our system was not up to code even though it was installed to all OSHA specifications. We lost on appeal.
