There are 5 bricks in my chimney built in 1980 that for whatever reason prevent mold/mildew/moss from growing on them and I have absolutely no idea why.

Those five appear to not be of the “aged” or “distressed” variety.

I like how your chimney is a hangout for loose bricks from the neighborhood

If you’d stop being lazy and power wash the whole chimney instead of 5 bricks at a time…

This is like the polar opposite of that meme with the lighting striking the water captioned “fuck these five fish in particular”. This time it’s “bless these five bricks in particular”

I got it straight away (they are polished, the others are distressed). I also see the end bricks are less affected – not sure why that is. I think the way the water drains from the top has a lot to do with the overall pattern.
FYI hot water will kill that. Would be good to know how hot but we use boiled water.

Is it as simple as this is the area that gets hottest when you have a fire?

Press them in the correct sequence and a secret opening will appear!

Those 5 appear to have no texture on the edge like the others do. The texture gives grooves for plants to grab onto and hold on and they probably hold moisture as well.

Have the ones on top also just been there for 46 years?

They look like what I would call engineering bricks. Non pourous and specifically used where you don’t want bricks to crack due to weathering.

Heat from the chimney maybe? Is it used often?
