The provenance is “from an old collection” not very precise 😀 , the subject is unique, the style is unique, the technique is unique, I have never seen garnets cut like this for this period they are usually flat. There is no patterned foil under the garnets. If I had to guess I would have said it’s a mughal piece.
I wonder how it was identified as merovingian
