      Mail delivery in Indian Territory (Oklahoma) in the mid-19th century was dominated by the Butterfield Overland Mail Company, which operated a 2,795-mile route from 1858–1861. Crossing through the Choctaw and Chickasaw Nations, this service used stagecoaches and, later, specialized wagons to deliver mail in under 25 days.
