End of the cold war maybe.

I don’t know about this one, it’s more like the bad guys vs the somehow even worse guys. The allied countries were still committing atrocities across the globe before, during and after WWII. It just so happens that their opposition was about as close as one can get to evil incarnate.

Countries don’t have morals, they have interests.
In a democratic regime the morals of the voting populace flow upward towards the seat of power.
In authoritarian regimes only a select few imprint their morals upon the seat of power, with catastrophic effects for everyone else.

Some people mix “understanding the material situation of an event” with justification of why the people in the event did what they did. Just because someone isn’t a cartoon villain doing Evil for Evil’s sake it doesn’t mean they aren’t actually evil and were doing evil to achieve their goals.

I mean both are true. It’s not black and white but it’s slightly grubby white or maybe light to medium grey at worst versus very very dark grey stained black with old blood.
Yes the allies weren’t perfect and I guess there must have been some redeeming features about the axis (though none come to mind) but it was still clear who was the worse side.

Kinda. They were on the right side by accident and IDK if I’d exactly consider the US and the USSR ‘good guys’. They weren’t actively genociding people like the Axis were but both societies had major issues which would later lead to a lot of suffering during the cold war. Much of the Allies also only stumbled upon the genocide, really. It wasn’t the reason that they went to war in the first place. If all the geopolitics were the same without the whole Holocaust thing, the Allies would still have engaged the Axis.

the kind of genocidal and war crime shit that the nazis and imperial Japanese were doing had already been done by the allied powers in the previous two centuries
the issue was that the axis powers were latecomers as nation states and, thus, when wanting to do colonialism, all of the good stuff had been gobbled up already, so they had to conolize their neighbors and/or try to take colonial possessions from the allies
that was their sin in the eyes of the allies,
for example, the nazis just to tried to speed run everything that the USA did in the 18th and 19th centuries:
1) round up a racialized group of people into camps and try to exterminate them
(Indigenous Americans)
2) invade a neighboring “civilized” country and annex their territory
(Mexican-American War)
3) Snatch colonies away from another imperial power
(Spanish-American War)
WW2 is less of an issue of good vs. bad guys, and more of an issue of who is allowed to get away it

I think the point of the statement isn’t so much to say that the moral justification that each side utilized is the arbiter of what is good and what is bad – rather that war is always fought by individuals who are inherently varied in their just actions and unjust actions and that there may be nobility in fighting for a just cause but there is no nobility in killing another man.
Tobi_1989 on
People love to cherrypick allied war crimes and honorable german officers and make a point based on that.
And while I admit it’s fucked up that a lot of allied war crimes went unpunished (whether they were done on purpose or not), what counts is the Cassus Belli and literally nobody with a shred of conscience can argue the general consensus on that level.
In that sense, WW2 was the most black and white war ever.
FarPlay5055 on
It wasn’t that WW2 had clear good guys and bad guys, it’s that the axis were so horrible morally speaking that even the bare minimum by the allies would mean they’re better than the axis.

It should be obvious to anyone with at least 2 brain cells that the allies were the good guys.
That being said it is important to recognize that even the good guys can do bad things. That is to say it is good to be informed on why they were the good guys instead of, forgive the term, glazing.

Well among other things there was the colonialism that was mainly among the allies because Italy lost theirs early and Germany didn’t have any after WWI there was Executive Order 9066 there was Stalin and everything he did and also the invasion of Iran so the allies were the better guys but I wouldn’t say the good guys

You don’t get to be the good guys when you kill defenseless children with nuclear bombs or burn 10.000 civilians alive on purpose. There’s no forgiveness for that.
PR-wise the allies were lucky that the germans were so absolutely and unforgivably monstrous. That Japan were brutal beyond belief.
