The tudors after him were welsh(ending with Elizabeth 1, then the Stewarts were Scottish, Cromwell wasn’t a monarch, then the Stewart’s died out after Anne, and then Germans ruled till today

Careful, if you say that too loud, the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha might send you a very polite, slightly German cease and desist.

No the last monarch of England who was English was Edgar II. Richard III was just another Norman usurper.

    4. He wasn’t English, he was Norman.
The last king of England whose family was English was Harold Godwinson.

    5. Why? There have been multiple monarchs who were born in England and spoke English as their main language since then…

“Oh but the bloodline came from somewhere else”

I don’t hold with that weird genetic nationalist rubbish. If you are born somewhere, speak the language and are socialised in that culture then you are definitely from that country no matter your parents heritage.

A modern person born in England today with, say, Carribean or Asian heritage from immigrant grandparents would be… English.

The last king of England who was English was Harold. 1066 and all that. Richard I Queen of the English was Norman, a French-speaking Norwegian.

The current lot are German and Greek… except that the ‘Greek’ is mostly Danish/German.

Rue, Britannia, Britannia rues the day…

If you’re going to be this pedantic about it, you can argue that England hasn’t had a monarch at all since the Union of Crowns in 1603, as every one since has been the King or Queen of Great Britain (and Ireland/Northern Ireland/Empire/Commonwealth etc etc)

    8. nope. all of the Plantagenets were Norman. Almost all of the Modern UK aristocracy are the descendants of those who came over with William the Conquerer. The majority of the wealth of the UK is still in the hands of the Normans.

    9. No, the last monarch of England that was English was Charles III, because he was born and raised in England, and as such is English.

Okay got this was poorly thought out, I was more thinking about how the smaller parts of the uk and foriegn powers had monarchs on the throne culturally from there rather than from England which has a comparatively massive population and industry

Richard III and the entire Plantagenet Dynasty are French. The last true English King would be Harold Godwinson.
