Well yeah, duh, why do you think everyone in that era claimed to be living in ‘the dark ages’. Sun went darker. Duh.

Interestingly enough, the only time period that would’ve looked like this was the late industrial revolution/early 20th century. Coal turned everything black.

I mean if you’ve been in Edinburgh at any other time other than summer that is true

Yes but how are modern audiences going to understand it’s a crapsack setting without clear visual clues like this? Do you expect the showrunners to do world-building and exposition instead of just slapping a blueish gray filter? You know that will leave less time for explosions and fan service right?
Our minimalist white washed world wouldn’t handle the whimsy or colors of the time…I mean, imagine, what if people start to realize their miserable environment ?!

Little know fact: during the dark ages, astronomers assert that the was a multiple century long period of solar flares in such a way that the atmospheric ionization actually caused increased condensation and could layers. In other words, overcast skies were much more common during this period, and the dark ages really *were dark*

Either very grey or very brown, like in [this post](https://www.reddit.com/r/HistoryMemes/s/OpZDobG1iS)

[here’s an interesting article explaining this phenomenon more deeply](https://youtu.be/5SZYz7lZRRI?si=eERLkmjVCMSDknxY)
They couldnt use proper LED lighting while filming in medieval times, becasue it wasnt invented yet.
Fairly modern Edinburgh Castle there. That area with the trees and lovely paths was a swampy bit of land for a long while till the 1800s
Colour film hadn’t been invented yet
