Taken just weeks after Antietam, this photo shows Abraham Lincoln visiting a Union intelligence camp run by Allan Pinkerton, America’s first real spymaster.

Pinkerton had moved his Secret Service operations right onto the battlefield, feeding live intel to General McClellan.

Even better: the photo wasn’t staged. Lincoln was asked for a solo portrait, but instead told everyone nearby to jump in.

This moment happened right before he issued the Emancipation Proclamation.
