Where i live if you raise your hands on a pickpoket you risk to get legal problems, i remember a burglar compensated for injury sustained during a robbery and is not an isolated case

I’m Italian, and here you can’t do almost anything against thieves of any kind. If you’re robbed on the street, you can’t fight back because the thief might report you if you injure him. If he breaks into your home, you can’t hold him, otherwise it becomes kidnapping. If you accidentally injure him on your property, you have to pay him for the damages. If you kill him, you go to prison, unless he was about to kill you. You still risk excessive self-defense, and you go to prison.

Ancedotal.. got pick pocketed in Barcelona. I was ~19. I fucking threw that guy into a wall so hardhes head bounced off it. He was like what your wallet is right there and like threw it out of his sleeve as he pointed. My fight or flight was still going so I just lunged at my wallet like my precious. He scampered before I even stood up. As I explained the story to all my friends 10 minutes later at the hostel I was like…oh fuck…and all the senarios of him having a knife or gun ran through my head. In the moment I was just immediately pissed and just like fuck you give it back.
