Huh, TIL 182 was completely random because they needed to think up a new name on the spot since their record company threatened to change it for them. An Irish band named Blink threatened to sue and the record company didn’t want a legal battle.

    2. Amusingly, it would have been around the same time that I added 179 to my name to be different.

I remember when Kara’s Flowers changed their name to Maroon.

They got a cease and desist from another band called Maroon, so they added a ‘5’.

    4. I always get Blink-182, Sum 41, and 311 mixed up… I think it’s the numbers and the era.

I grew up around Omaha, NE so I should remember 311 better but I still get it mixed up.

    5. 1-8-2 corresponds to AHB in the alphabet, which coincidentally works as an acronym for Ass Hole Blink

    6. So that’s why the album art only says blink! I didn’t know about the name change, this is cool.

Sometimes it makes me want to laugh, sometimes I want to take my toaster in the bath 🎶

    8. I had one of their demo tapes prior to Cheshire Cat. They played a small ages club here in San Diego and would throw their demo tapes into the crowd. Cover charge for those shows was like $5. I miss those days.

They also had to change the original artwork of their biggest album “Enema of the State” because the nurse originally had a Red Cross symbol and it was not allowed. So same deal as the pre -182 affix

    10. Has this release been digitized yet? Collectors out there would love to see unique pieces like this digitized.

    11. There’s a credit in an early MxPx insert that credits a bunch of bands, including Blink-187

For a hot minute the Insane Clown Posse was signed to a Disney owned record label (Hollywood Records) so there are copies of their Great Milenko album with Mickey Mouse on the back. Disney immediately pulled them off the label on its release date. But I feel its as rare as something like this.

    13. Proving choosing a band name is like choosing an email or gamer tag, if it’s not unique enough just throw some numbers in and you’re good

I remember this and even asked the band if adding the 182 was a call out to “Turk 182” but they (at least Mark) didn’t think so.

    15. I heard it’s because Al Pacino swears 182 times in Scarface but not sure if it’s true.

I know a lot of obscure trivia, but this is new to me. Thank you for sharing, absolutely perfect post for this sub, imo

Mark talks about this in his book, definitely worth the read (or listen, if you’re into audiobooks)
