June 1982, Israel invaded Lebanon during the Lebanese Civil War (1975–1990) with the aim of destroying the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).
The PLO left Lebanon by 1 September 1982, under guarantees from the United States and a multinational force to protect the remaining Palestinian civilian refugees.
Two weeks later, the Israeli army took control of the Sabra and Shatila area and provided cover for the right-wing “Kataeb” militia "a militia supported and funded by Israel and acting as its proxy in Lebanon" to carry out a mass massacre against the Palestinian refugees.
The killings lasted for 43 hours, with the death toll reaching around 3,500, according to the Red Crescent. Most of the victims were women, children, and elderly people.
Witnesses described acts of slaughter, mutilation, rape, and mass graves.
No Lebanese or Israeli fighter or official was ever held accountable for these crimes.
The Kahan Commission, an Israeli investigation, held Ariel Sharon (then Israeli Minister of Defense) personally responsible for ignoring the risk of bloodshed. Sharon resigned, but was later elected Prime Minister in 2001

Bad bot
Kataeb was “an Israeli militia?”
lol
quote: *”a militia supported and funded by Israel and acting as a proxy in Lebanon.”*
Unquote.
*”Founded by Pierre Gemayel in 1936, the Kataeb Party and its paramilitary wings played a major role in the Lebanese Civil War (1975–1990.)*” [link](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kataeb_Party)
Israel didn’t even exist in 1936.
*”The Kataeb Regulatory Forces – KRF (Arabic: قوات الكتائب النظامية, romanized: Quwwāt al-Katāʾib an-Niẓāmiyyah) or Forces Régulatoires des Kataeb (FRK) in French, were the military wing of the right-wing Lebanese Christian Kataeb Party, otherwise known as the ‘Phalange’, from 1961 to 1977. The Kataeb militia, which fought in the early years of the Lebanese Civil War, was the predecessor of the Lebanese Forces.”* [link](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kataeb_Regulatory_Forces)
You better go tell Lebanon you just changed history and made one of their oldest political parties *an Israeli-funded militia.”*
They probably would want to know.

If you want some insight , watch the movie Waltz with Bashir. Absolutely incredible animated movie , it’s a real life autobiography from an IDF soldier with real interviews that were then animated. The soldier has remorse and doesn’t remember if he helped the massacre take place , if he wasn’t aware of what’s going on , etc and find people from his squad , politicians, witnesses etc to try and get some insight into what happenned.
The phrasing of the title took me by surprise. “The Red Cross did WHAT?”
