This meme doesn't include WW1, Stalinist deportations like the Crimean Tatars, the 1905 Revolution, the Orange Revolution, Euromaidan, the Donbas War, or the ongoing Putin Special Operation.
First it lost a lot of young men in World War One. Then came the massive clusterfuck of the Russian Civil War. Ukrainian nationalists, the White Army, the German army, Lenin’s Bolsheviks, Makhno’s Anarchists, and Green militias waged a vicious war for the region’s future. The Whites and right-wing Ukrainian militants, particularly Symon Petliura’s nationalists, targeted and massacred over 200,000 Ukrainian Jews, laying the groundwork for the Holocaust.
After a relatively sane period of the 1920s NEP, Stalin’s Politburo violently forced its extreme collectivization campaigns onto the region in the early 1930s. Even as entire villages starved to death and children cannibalized each other, Stalin willfully drove up impossible procurement rates and refused to send grain aid to starving villages. Collectivization failed and ruined the USSR’s agricultural system. This also destroyed Ukraine’s peasant culture and the region suffered an economic collapse. 3.9M Ukrainians starved to death in these famines, as did 1.5M Kazakhs and over 3M Russians.
The deadliest period by far was the Nazi Occupation between June 1941 and April 1944. The Nazis had planned to subjugate the Slavs as “hewers of wood and drawers of water”, and this was implemented by Erich Koch to horrific proportions. The Nazis slaughtered Jews and Ukrainian POWs, starved cities like Kyiv and Kharkiv, and raped and enslaved Ukrainian women and girls by the millions. The Nazis murdered nearly 8M Ukrainians, including 1.3M soldiers and 2M Jews.
And then the NKVD deported the Crimean Tatars in 1944.

>Young Ukrainian women were rounded up and forced into army brothels. This slavery subjected them to continual rape by off duty soldiers. If they resisted, they were brutally punished and even shot. Her husband followed one of the transports to Babi Yar to find out what was happening. ‘That’s what he saw through a little crack in the high fence. The people were being separated, men were told to go to one side, and women and children to the other side. They were naked (they had to leave their things in another place), and then they were mowed down by sub-machine guns and machine guns, the sound of firing drowned their screams and howling.

>“In one village in the Kharkiv region, several women did their best to look after children… Their wards were in a pitiful condition: ‘The children had bulging stomachs; they were covered in wounds, in scabs; their bodies were bursting. We took them outside, we put them on sheets, and they moaned. One day the children suddenly fell silent, we turned around to see what was happening, and they were eating the smallest child, little Petrus. They were tearing strips from him and eating them. And Petrus was doing the same, he was tearing strips from himself and eating them, he ate as much as he could. The other children put their lips to his wounds and drank his blood. We took the child away from the hungry mouths and we cried.”

Ukraine should form a support group with Poland at this point.

We live in a time of degradation these days. Attempts to find a victim (weakness) and ennoble it can only be described as degeneracy.

Belarus had a similarly rough go. Not fun being trapped between Western European and East Asian Empires.

Meanwhile best dude Makhno created a independant organization that kicked the Germans and the White’s ass, protected jews and other minorities ACTUALLY collectivized the land (unlike the Soviets), only to be betrayed by Trotsky.

Historically Ukraine is the most unlucky Slavic country. Destroyed by Mongols, conquered by Poles, attacked by Tataras, conquered by Russia, survived ww1, ww2, holomodor and that war.

1918: it was the Ukrainian bands killing the Jews
1933: it was the local Ukrainian authorities taking the food away. The central government was sending food aid to starving regions
1941: correct, but the guy in the uniform was also a Ukrainian Banderite from UPA.

Reminds me of conversation with some friends around a year ago when I net a girl from Ukraine, we were all discussing the sizes of our families, our history and relatives we know about and she says to someone with a big family something along the lines of “wow that’s incredible you have so many family members, I barely know about mine and have such a small one” my mind immediately went essentially this here

And people wonder why the Ukrainians are so hardcore about the whole ‘give me liberty or give me death’ thing now, vs Russia?

Ukraine had a rough time in the 20th Century.
