Why didn’t they just send somebody up there to take it off? It’s not like they would need to bother bringing them back.

    2. No Venera program slander on my watch. It was literally about sending sacrificial probes into 450C, 90 atm hell while not having the best tech available and having at most slightly over 2 hours before the insides of your probe start melting. It’s not like you can fix anything once it enters the atmosphere so it’s basically “fuck it we ball” and if some parts don’t work properly so be it.

    3. That’s because Venus is a fucking hellscape, not because Soviet tech was bad. Imo the Soviets did win the space race, they sent the first satellite, the first man, the first space walk, sending a person to the moon was an arbitrary goal, the Soviets got most of the firsts.

The funniest part is that Soviet engineers redesigned the lens caps specifically because the ones on Venera 9-12 wouldn’t pop off. They made the new ones work so well they landed exactly where the soil sampler needed to hit.

    5. There’s a very good reason why the Americans didn’t try to put a lander on Venus.

This is more because of the extremely harsh conditions of Venus, not bad Soviet tech.

A better Soviet tech slander would be the N1 for the Space Race.

I won’t rag on the soviets for Venus. They did their best, Venus is a nightmare.

I will however, rag on them for basically everything else.

    7. The fact that the soviets managed to land anything on Venus and sends pictures back is more impressive than humans on the moon

      >first satellite
      >first person in space
      >first space walk
      >first space station

      Fucking losers

    9. Wow. So now we’re just making shit up?

How are you so threatened by a country that no longer exists?

    10. Who was the first to send a satellite into space? Who where the first to send a living being into space? Who where the first to send a human into space?
Why do we keep saying the Soviets lost the space race? They won all but one race.

    11. You debate who won the space race using arbitrary milestones like first man in space vs first man on the moon

I realize that the “space race” was actually just propaganda gloss for weapons programs

We are not the same 👔

    12. I’m sorry, but pointing the camera at the sun from the surface of the fucking moon is infinitely funnier and dumber than landing a probe in literal hell and fucking up the lens cap detachment. Rag on soviets all you want but Venus missions were absolute PEAK “space exploration mission for the sake of it”.

“The Soviets could’ve won the Space Race if-” they didn’t drop out. The Soviets made a lot of progress in the Space Race, but internal rivalries and meddling from higher ups meant that they couldn’t keep up after a while. Quite frankly, if Kennedy hadn’t been shot, we probably wouldn’t have gone all-in on landing on the Moon by 1969, and the Soviets would’ve had a chance to catch up regardless of the road bumps, but we went balls-to-the-wall to make JFK’s dream a reality and with the issues the Soviets were plagued with, there was no way for them to catch up. If the Soviets had kept trying for the Moon, who knows, maybe we would’ve established lunar colonies, maybe we would’ve tried for Mars, but we got to the Moon in spite of the technology of the day, not because of it, hence why it’s taken us so long to go back.

    14. To me the Soviets won every single milestone of the so called “space race”. Putting a man on the moon is impressive, but the combined victories of the soviet space program make that not much impressive considering that it has pretty much the less practical advantage from all the milestones. If you say the US “won the space race” it’s a great result of decades of propaganda

Along with the pictures taken during the Venera program, they also recorded sounds which you can listen to on YouTube
