    1. You can walk and chew gum at the same time. Appreciate the great and denounce the terrible.

Every human civilization got its… Uh… Darker shadows. Romans didn’t perform child sacrifices, but they had companies who specialized in crucifixion who offered special fees for crucifiying children. The pot was calling the kettle black a lot.

    2. In this new wave of reports saying that Carthage did child sacrifice I have yet to see one actually address some of the points that naysayers have brought up.

I read on paper that brought up the lack of child graves as a possible indicator that these were cemeteries not sacrifices.

To anyone about to respond to this all heated I would like to remind everyone this is an academic discussion not a morality one .

    3. I love researching carthage because scholarly consensus just went from “Child sacrifice was a myth” to “Oh shit we found really small bones in jars it was real” to “oh they were animal bones” to now “Oh shit they also had human bones”.

But what does the red symbiote that fought Spider-Man have to do with history?

The same kind of child bones in urns thing was found in Greek ruins, I don’t think it’s a slam dunk on child sacrifice, infant mortality was kind of crazy high to the point it’s not surprising there’s a different burial procedure for them. It’s absolutely possible, even the Romans who “hated human sacrifice” went and did human sacrifice when they were panicked enough, but it’s just not evidence enough on its own.

My takeaway is that children who died young were offered up to be burnt so they could be with the gods in the same way burning sacrifices offered the food and objects immolated to the gods. For whatever reason their remains were likely kept by the priesthood rather than put in a family tomb.

    6. And then you have thought up alternate history stuff like the Ante Bellum mod for Europa Universalis 4.

Where Hannibal said: “Fuck this Roman shit, let’s just sail west and get out of here.” and established some successful colonies on the East coast of America.

Norse people are there too of course.
