      Context: recent genetic studies indicate that hybridization between neanderthals and homo sapiens happened almost exclusive between neanderthal males and sapiens females. There are several possible explanations for this, but the funniest is the idea that male neanderthals were much more attractive to modern humans than the females were, for some reason.

      Why the fuck did we kill off the neanderthals? Those idiots could have easily worked construction, and doubled our profits.

      Memes aside, in many societies women’s (and men’s) mating preferences were tightly controlled to ensure they would only pair with the “appropriate” partner. It eventually manifested in some peculiar or even ugly customs, like stoning for adultery, female genital circumcision, hijabs/niqabs, or sharing wives among some Arctic/Siberian people (nevtumgyt).
