Got my nails done with a fresh set two days ago. Today this happened — the whole nail came off completely, root and all. No blood, no pain now, but it was a shock seeing the full thing detached.

    1. wow I didnt realize the root was that big. how did it come off? did it get caught on something or did it just sort of came out?

    2. I’ve had this happen to me twice. Once to my pinky and more recently to my big toe. The pinky was from an impact and the toe was from missing a step while going up stairs. Both really hurt and sucked, but my pinky nail is back to normal (happened a decade ago) and my toe is well on its way (happened last year).

Edit: I’ve somehow never broken a nail, not even during those incidents. Both times the nail and root were pulled out.

I thought this was one of those fake rubber witch fingers they sell during halloween

    4. Ouhh… New fear unlocked, oh my gosh. I had a toenail come off once after working in ill-fitting steel toe shoes, but it was small and I didn’t really notice it so it wasn’t that bad. I hope your nail grows back without any issues.

    5. I’m so surprised by how square the corners are, if you hadn’t already shared the photo of your poor nail bed I would have honestly had a hard time believing what I was seeing was a nail root!
      Get well soon, OP’s pinkie!

    6. I never realized how far back nails go. If this is a fresh set it would have been at the cuticle still, but there’s sooooo much nail behind it!

The only time I ever lost a whole nail was when I pinched it at the gym beneath a 75-lb. weight I was re-racking.

Can’t reattach it but if it makes you feel better, even with actual bruising to the fingertip, they usually still just grow back fine, as long as the nail bed itself isn’t damaged. Having a bare finger definitely feels weird for a while, though.

I mentioned this post in front of my sisters and the dermatologist one said, “oh, onycholysis”….like we would know what that was. Anyway, google it. Apparently its common and isolated to one nail usually . TIL as well!

    10. Op, maybe you should get a check up and blood test just to be safe that you aren’t deficient in something?

Glad there was no pain at least!

    11. This happened to me when I was little, Playstation fell on my big toe corner first and the whole nail fell off a month later. Very soft skin under there!

    12. Omg this happened to my cousin and her bf felt so so bad, she said it hurt for awhile and was really sensitive and tender healing. I’m sorry!

Can you please upload the pic of the rest of your finger? I have no idea what this would look like

I don’t get it! Was the white square part like under your skin?  I can’t picture where it goes
