I just stopped smoking and I’ve been seeing videos online of other people trying to quit smoking, and the comments are almost always the same. It’s a bunch of people claiming the person quitting is “weak”. They say things like “I’m a productive stoner,” “if you cant handle it that’s on you,” and my favorite, “weeds not addictive,” and so on…
I could be wrong here, but I don’t feel like there aren’t many other addictions that are treated this way. It’s really wild to see.
I was getting really frustrated at these comments, but I remembered that I honestly used to say the same things when I smoked constantly. Why is that?
Is weed so normalized now, that quitting is actually crazier than constantly being high? It really doesn’t make sense to me.
To be clear, I’m in no way talking down on these people at all. I was exactly like this. Im just concerned that people out there want to quit, but this addiction has been so minimized that people don’t even see it as an issue.
Anyone else noticing this?!

There are small pockets of any hobby/addiction/activity where “quitters are weak”
The algorithm leans hard into these for whatever reason after only one or two plays
Have you heard that trying to lose weight makes you fat-phobic?? And going to the gym is a right wing extremist activiry
Try not to get so bogged down on what others are saying, unless they are people you respect.
Stay strong! I envy the people able to quit their bad habits.
You’re not weak or lame for quitting. Sometimes we need a break or we just don’t want to do it anymore, do what makes you happy!
I feel you! People hate to admit but weed is an addictive substance. Maybe not as psychologically dependent as nicotine or alcohol but it’s “lifestyle” addiction. You get used to the high as your “normal” and way to deal with stress, boredom or life in general.
It’s easy to become dependent on weed to regulate your stress, activity level or interest in certain tasks.
It’s only necessary to quit if you have an addiction to it and it’s negatively impacting your life.

Remember that 50% of everything you see on the internet was posted by bots that are designed to spark engagement. Making you feel some kinda way is their entire purpose.
It’s the same concept of someone saying they are quitting drinking. I don’t believe there’s really any significant difference between the two, now that weed is legal and pretty much normalized.
We all know drinking is bad for you. If you want to quit, go for it. But your boys will still make fun of you for not having a beer now and then. I’m still drinking even if you aren’t.
There’s also the argument to make that if you want to quit, just do it quietly. I don’t need to hear how awesome you feel not drinking when we’re all hanging at a bar. Some people may feel people who “quit” and constantly bring it up are looking down on those who choose to continue their vices. “You think you’re better than me?” is probably a common response, and is why folks on Reddit are quick to jump in with negative reactions.
“quitting is weak” is something a person who is projecting, convicted and cannot justify their own bad behavior say. Hypocritical activities
The internet is now built on trying to get a reaction out of people.
A lot of people make smoking weed a major part of their identity, the same as any other group. You’ll see the same kind of thing among alcoholics, opiate addicts, literally every group that’s dependent on a drug to cope with their life. You’ll have meth addicts saying they’re extra productive and it’s not like they smoke crack. You’ll have crack addicts saying they’re extra productive and at least they don’t smoke meth.
If you’re dependent on a substance to get through your day, and that substance isn’t managed by a medical professional, then that’s a problem. Water and reasonable amounts of caffeine excluded obviously
Quitting weed is absolutely not bad. It’s always helpful to gain a clear mind for a while.
