I mean, would the average peasant even know what the king looks like outside of the carefully designed pictures that make him look like well kingly?
As a peasant, probably wouldn’t know what he looked like at all. As a noble in that court, probably a mix of disillusionment, slight embarrassment, a feeling of being on a sinking ship, and a ruthless pragmatism in securing whatever political advantage my family wanted.
Each court had its own unique problems & rules, but the game for the nobles hardly changes: do whatever it takes for the family to prosper.
