The GI Bill: Because nothing says ‘higher education’ like a four-year detour through a desert.

To be fair, I know a lot of people who took the deal and largely do not regret it outside of joking around.
A lot of them were X years in college + 1 in service to pay them back.
Everything is covered. Tuition and room and board and you got a monthly stipend to do whatever you want with. If you spoke other languages, you could get a bigger stipend. I knew a guy who learned Russian and Chinese for an extra thousand or two on top of that stipend. He was rounding out extra retirement shit with it while in college.
On top of that you usually get to be an officer out of the gate. So better pay in service to boot when you go in.
It was NUTS.
If I didn’t have a debilitating injury, I would have taken it.
You get veteran benefits when you get out, and have an education, and if you weren’t dumb with your money you sat on a nice fat pile of cash that’s just waiting for you when you’re done.
I wish I could have done it.
If they offered me a house id do it right now. Youd have to rebuild my leg, but damn straight id do it.

The people that make these memes have no understanding of how this shit works. I drive to work everyday and will never see combat, probably… maybe.

Jokes on them, the GI Bill barely covers the textbooks anymore.

The recruiters don’t even wait for you to finish the sentence before they start the paperwork

This is a solid meme. It made me have a good chuckle. Thank you.

That’s how that got me. I lost my academic scholarship but didn’t want to quit school and my parents wouldn’t help, so I joined up—I figured what could be so bad? (This was April 2001).
And the rest is…. History.

Honestly, sometimes it really feels like this is the only option left. Bleak.

I remember going to Warped Tour in like 2002 and there was a marine recruiting tent where if you did 10 pull ups they’d give you a water bottle or some shit. I looked at it said said to myself “Hey, I can do pull ups. Maybe if I do a bunch in front of that hot punk girl she’ll want to touch my dick” employing the finest 16 year-old logic. I started walking over and my friend grabbed be by the shoulder amd just said “What the hell are *doing?!*” and that snapped me out of it.
He was the best man at my wedding.
