
When the Titanic sank in the early morning of April 15th, 1912, the nearest ship was the SS Californian… whose captain and telegraph operator both literally slept through the sinking. As a result, 24-hour watches on wireless radios were required for all ships.

The requirement to have enough life boats for all the passengers instead of just hoping another ship shows before the ship sinks.
