Kamekameha was the main character. Anybody who disagreed with this had a close encounter with a cannon loaded with grapeshot. ́
As in general, they opposed him for outlawing the murder of commoners and human sacrifice, I don’t think their groundmeatification was an act of tyranny.
But apparently he didn’t like the Ireland part.
Pretty sure he used both the Union Jack and American Continental Union both as a gift by Captain George Vancouver and as a pragmatic to balance relations with the growing young American nation.
To be fair the Union Jack is pretty awesome.

I think I remember a possibly apocryphal story where he had asked what that flag meant and he was told “It represents the sovereignty of our king”
It was more likely to signal freindliness between the two countries and avoid other countries laying claim to it
