edit: Not sure objecting to the lawfully elected government requiring eligible citizens to perform military service to fight literal Nazis, the perpetrators of the Holocaust is something worthy of opposing.
to be fair, the primary objective of the war for the empire was to defend France and liberate Francophone Belgium. If anything the Quebecois should have been happy to defend the motherland against Germany.

The missing part here is that M. King won in a tightly contested election by promising the french canadian voters they would NOT be conscripted in a war alongside the British empire.
We don’t have a draft. We have conscription. There is no tombola where names are pulled out in a draft. That’s a US practice only. William Lyon MacKenzie King was PM during the Second World War. Under NRMA, non-volunteers were not required to go abroad until 1945. The few that saw combat were too poorly trained to be of much use. These “zombies” were not defined by language or religion. Generalities about those resisting going into combat can be made, but they are just generalities. They were individuals with their own motives for refusing to “active”. If we’re talking about PM Borden’s Military Service Act of August 1917 then it’s a slightly different story.
The lasting division started with “[Riel] shall hang, though every dog in Quebec barks in his favour.”
