Okay, guys, let’s have a debate about who the modern Rome is. Get the popcorn here -> 🍿

Everyone in this sub hates the fact that it’s actually the ottomans (just because they’re not white. Pro tip: the Romans weren’t white)

The Eastern and Western Roman Empires died in WW1 (Austria-Hungary/Ottoman Empire)

If rome participated in the right of conquest, it doesn’t seem far fetched for the ottomans to have the claim.

    5. i think which side of the “when did Rome die” debate you fall on really depends on what you define as roman.

If Rome is defined as the empire centralised within the city of Rome, Rome died when the Western Empire fell under Odoacer.

If Rome is the Greco-Roman empire, where the citizens of the empire identified themselves as “Romans” wherever the government may be located, Rome fell when Constantinople fell in 1453.

If Rome is the title of “Caesar of Rome” or “Emperor of the Romans”, then Rome died in 1806 or 1922. (Though I will argue in this case the Ottomans have a stronger case since they ruled over the land of the Byzantines and the lands the Ottomans took over was still called Romania, “Land of the Romans” too.)

I’m personally of the second camp, but I think there’s a case to be made for all 3. Except for the HRE. No one likes the HRE.
