    1. A little background: barmy (бармы) are a type of necklace. They were a men’s adornment and part of the prince’s regalia. In 1238, the Mongols captured the ancient Russian city of Ryazan and massacred its inhabitants. The city was never rebuilt on this site, and modern-day Ryazan is located nearby. Someone, likely in charge of the prince’s treasury, hid these barmy (along with many other jewelry) in the ground and never returned for them – a common story from the time of the Mongol invasion. Not so much remains of pre-Mongol Rus’, and what remains is an important part of the historical legacy of that era.
