The difference now is that the mask is off. In prior wars, we at least used tried to make some justification for how we are the good guys. “It’s about WMDs” they would say, or “it’s about freedom” or “curbing the spread of communism”. We at least tried to follow ROEs (with varying degrees of success). What blows my mind is there does not seem to be an attempt at a false justification for the rabid base to point to.
