Malik Ambar is legitimately one of the most interesting people in history. He was born in Ethiopia and sold into slavery by his parents as a child. He ends up sold to a former slave in India who works in the royal court of the Ahmadnagar Sultanate.After his master’s death he gets freed from slavery and through a series of political maneuvers and millitary victories he ends up the defacto leader of the sultanate. His kingdom is then powerful enough to act as a constant millitary rival to the growing mughal empire that would later conquer almost all of India.
Even after his death and the fall of his kingdom, the Maratha chiefs, who he employed and empowered, would go on to be one of the major millitary forces in Indian history. I’ve always thought that his life could make an insane movie or game of thrones style tv show.
Fun fact about this painting, it never happened. Ambar’s millitary successes were so frustrating to the mughals that emperor Jahangir considered him his arch nemesis and comissioned this painting out of frustration. .
