During World War II, the statue of David, which was made by Michelangelo between 1501 and 1504, was wrapped in sand bags before being encased in bricks to prevent destruction from bombings [2124×1650]

Thank god, imagine if we had lost this amazing piece of art? It’s an incredible sculpture, just the size is mind blowing.
Edit: And now we’re allowed to see his winkie too!

It was moved from outside the entrance to the Palazzo Vecchio to the Academia after (if I’m not mistaken) the left arm was badly damaged in a riot(?)/ civil unrest
Edit: it was indeed damaged in a riot, and left arm broken BUT that happened in 1527 (just 23 years after it was placed outside the Signoria and when Michelangelo was still very much alive, 1475-1564)
It was deterioration due to the elements that prompted the move.
