
She died of Kidney disease on Valentine's Day 1884 shortly after giving birth to their first child.(TRs Mother also died in same house on the same day of Typhoid fever) The blue velvet box containing the 14-inch lock of hair was a secret discovery made by a biographer at the Sagamore Hill National Historic Site in Oyster Bay, New York.

I am 52 and have my grandmother’s braids, my mother’s braids, and my braids. I guess keeping those is a thing we used to do.
When my sibling died, the first thing I asked the mortician was if I could have some of their hair. It just felt so important to me. They kindly obliged.
