The so-called “Tlaloc Mask” is an Olmec-looking stone carved monument with no context, that was donated to Xalapa Museum in Mexico in 1985. No further information, nor who donated it, the approximate place of origin, nor the circumstances of its finding ever became clear [2192×2048]

Incredible.
It’s not unlikely that the person who donated it got it from someone else, or even inherited it from family. An interesting piece like this may have traded hands many times since it was found.
Could we get a pic of it with a banana for scale, please?
In short it was probably illegally looted by vermin and donated in order to keep from getting arrested after failing to sell it. Or the buyer/descendent of the buyer got remorse later on and donated it.
imagine sound of angry archaeologist when no context is given
Olmec Jesse Plemons
Can’t they date it somehow?
Stone carver definitely dabbled in the peyote .. really awesome how the face is made up of so many different creatures and things
