The United States maintains extensive sanctions on Venezuela, primarily targeting its oil sector through PDVSA, the state oil company, to pressure the Maduro regime by restricting revenue from oil exports.
Sanctions began in 2017-2019 under E.O. 13850 and 13884, halting U.S. crude imports and oil-for-debt swaps, which crippled Venezuela’s economy and production.
A U.S. court auction of PDV Holding shares to settle Venezuela’s $20+ billion creditor claims concluded in late 2025, transferring control to Amber Energy (Paul Singer’s Elliott Management affiliate) for $5.9 billion, though PDVSA retains nominal ties amid 2026 geopolitical changes. CITGO no longer processes PDVSA crude due to sanctions but awaits potential revival under U.S. oversight.
How about we just talk about the fact that though they did capture Maduro, they left the same regime in de facto charge of the country. The only other contender is Trump claiming he’s in command of the country and pretty much exclusively talking about how we’re going to be taking all the oil.
They did nothing to actually liberate Venezuela they just took insane action in what seems like, per what Trump is saying, a naked oil grab. If you just listen to Trump there is nothing else going on here except that we are there explicitly to take the oil.

99.9% of them could not have pointed out Venezuela on a map until Dear Leader told them it’s supes important that we take their oil.
