American Individualism is toxic mythology. The only reason the US survived and progressed as a nation was that people worked together for a common good. Colonial settlers relied on community to survive. Rugged individualism didn’t build the United States. Groups of people coming together to work towards common goals did.
It’s how human beings survive ( and Americans aren’t exempt from the basic rules of human social evolution ). There’s a reason why in many early societies one of the most harsh punishments was banishment from the tribe. Because without the support of a community , the odds of survival were dramatically reduced.
