Eric Moussambani Malonga after only 8 months of training represented Equatorial Guinea at the 2000 Olympics. He did all his training in a small hotel pool. Both of his competitors false started so he could set a national record. He swam a 1:52.72 which is the slowest in history but also his PB.

well fucking done.
Eric the eel Olympic legend
…. What?
How did that impact the other two competitors who DQ’d themselves?
Help me understand why ? Why do such people compete and how are they allowed to do it ?
What is the average time for this competition?
It’s nice and all but the Olympics are meant to celebrate excellence
« Il va se noyer ! »
Hey, he beat the Equitorial Guinea record.
Wouldn’t he still have had the record anyway?

legend
Won’t some people see this as being pitied and disrespected?
Am I the only one who busted out laughing when I saw his legs flailing around underwater?

He eventually lowered his time from 1:52.72 (2.33x the WR time of 48.30) to under 57.00 (1.18x the WR time). That’s still probably slow by Olympic standards but hey, I’d like to see you do it quicker.
Why there’s an ad of polymarket in an old clip ?
Another day of crying for strangers on internet
His competitors were from different countries right? Why did they false start and how would have helped Eric establish a national record?
We need a longer title
He swims like me, I call it drowning worm
The poly market ad is on the post. Fuck off
Gonna sound all iamverybadass but I’m confident I could beat his Olympic record. Don’t know about beating his Olympic time, tho.
What does the competitors false starting have to do with his time?
Popping up the WR time near the end was cold blooded
That’s why there’s a life guard at the Olympics
Why did they need to false start for him to set a National Record? Surely his time would’ve counted regardless?
