    1. Now to be fair, I don’t want to commit apologia for this guy, but to say that he did not want reform, is a lie.

      However, his reforms would have been social and economic ones, not political, as he did oppose serfdom fiercely and visited Robert Owen in England to learn about utopian socialism as an economic model, however he was also a bit fearful man and he feared the revolt of the nobles if he would end serfdom so he postponed it and ordered his son, Alexander II on his deathbed to get it done immediately.

      Nicholas I despised the nobility as from his point of view, they just sat on their arses while the peasantry did all of the work, and his personal philosophy was more closer to protestant work ethic, despite the man being an Orthodox of course, as he was obsessed with order and work, trying to turn Russia from a feudal system into a military dictatorship under the imperial monarch, however as I stated, he never got to disband the serfdom because he feared that it would be too much.

      But yeah those Circassians did not deserve to die of course.
