During the battle of Imjin River a British Brigadier replied to an American query about how things were going with “A bit sticky, things are pretty sticky down there.”. About 650 British defending against *10,000* Chinese. The Americans thought that they meant it was nowhere near as bad as it actually was and didn’t send reinforcements.

To be fair, I think their response was a bit over the top. Most of us would only go that far if the bomb had actually gone off!
