      Singapore wasn’t as developed back then as it is today, but it was still more developed than the rest of Malaysia. Some feared Singapore would be the factory of the country, keeping the rest undeveloped. This compounded worries the Malay ethnicity had about the Chinese and Indian population being more urbanized and prosperous

      So Malaysia kicked Chinese-majority Singapore out of the country and used discriminatory laws to center political and economic power in the hands of the Malay ethnicity. Ironically, keeping Chinese and Indians out of many government jobs resulted in them further dominating the private sector
