American author, activist, eugenicist, and white supremacist Charles Smith, chairman of the American Association for the Advancement of Atheism, poses with a sign in Little Rock, Arkansas. For this sign, he became the last person in the United States to be convicted of blasphemy (1928) [716 x 800].

I mentioned that Smith was a white supremacist since he was a rather ardent racist, even for the time. The progressive movement in the early 20th century was tainted by eugenics and scientific racism. Smith was a perfect example of this phenomenon.
