    1. Seems like you could get the same effect with much smaller stilts if it really about the snakes.

    2. That may be where it allegedly started, but clearly this is now a cultural practice. It seems there is a hierarchy with older guys on taller stilts, too. Don’t think it’s just about snakes anymore.

They walk on stilts for a number of reasons, to collect wild honey, to see cattle in the long grass, to avoid large predators and snakes in the long grass, and as a display of skill.

Balance is important to the Banna people, as a coming of age ritual for young men involves running over the backs of cattle. Whether they can run over the backs of a certain number of cattle in a row determines whether they will be allowed to marry, so it’s a pretty big deal.

They also live in large tents that are constructed around the beds of the women and children, so I imagine being able to get up high and balance is fairly useful for that too.

    4. Its not just snakes – the stilts were originally meant to keep them above a variety of wild animals so they could avoid being attacked while herding cattle. Nowadays, its also a cultural spectacle, used as both a rite of passage for young boys and as a performance during ceremonies like weddings and festivals and such. The stick walking is important to their culture, and i recommend reading more about it.

Guys, I hate AI and fake posts, too, but if you just search up the tribe images of them and their stilts are the first thing to come up.

    6. It is now mostly ceremonial/ a rite of passage.

It should also be noted that it was traditionally used for protecting livestock by being able to see over tall grass for threats and avoiding them (including but not limited to snakes). What a misleading title.

    7. dude humans are so fucking sick its insane, casually inventing incredible solutions to problems. blows my mind that people genuinely think ancient monuments couldnt have been constructed when we have people doing shit like this casually.

    8. How do you get to the part where you’re standing? Do you pole vault with one stick while holding the other and then just set it down when you reach the pinnacle of your ascent? I can’t comprehend
