Magnus discovering memes about himself is like the final boss realizing he’s also DLC content.

I mean he’s certainly smart but possibly not wrong here. In the sense that a big intellect doesn’t necessitate being good at chess. But obsession and training can get you very far. And when that meets a singular talent we get Magnus Carlsen.

    3. The ability to play chess is the sign of a gentleman; the ability to play chess well is a sign of a wasted life..

Of course Magnus has been in rooms with people smarter than he is, but I doubt he’s ever been in a room where someone was as exceptional in their pursuit as he is.

Plus he’s a celebrity. Of course people will fawn over him.

    4. Someone mentioned that it’s better to memorize positions rather than analyze them to be successful. I believe Magnus is trying to say that he memorized so much more than anybody and can use them in his favor during matches which makes win games.

I can get this. I’m a medical doctor, and it’s built in to our profession that we are expected to be the smartest person in the room. Problem is that I only know medicine and fuckall else. I’ve had people expect me to be very intelligent about topics I know nothing about – like cars or business or taxes. And they get upset when I don’t, and I get the usual “but aren’t you a doctor??”

    6. He needs to do twitch like Hikaru so the viewers and trolls can bring him down to earth again lol

    7. Intelligence is a prerequisite, but to be the best of all time at chess you need top-tier pattern recognition and calculating in your head, and an unhealthy obsession with studying theory, puzzles, analyzing games, chess engines, etc.

    8. I was diagnosed with autism and adhd inattentive 2.5 years ago.

I would be considered high functioning autistic which pre-2013 would be considered Asperger’s. I process things in patterns and numbers and if I can visualize the problem I may be able to generate a formula.

I can pick out something that is amiss faster than most people but it can be weird sometimes. For example I will notice a different digit in the isbn of a book in a college syllabus before I notice the title or the book is different.

Or I might demand exact precision when someone gives a ball park figure and I correct them with a precise number.

But true. Repetition makes me much faster, and it also builds a sort of library of ready responses and mathematical patterns that make me faster to process and get to a number result.

    9. I think the hallmark of being an intelligent person is finding out you’re not that intelligent but other people less so.

And I think the hallmark of being a wise person is learning to live with that, instead of for instance begrudging that the world sort of “belongs” to the less intelligent.
