Nice gesture similar to Ataturk’s speech regarding teh ANZACs in Gallipoli.

Shouldn’t this go to r/comedyheaven because the russians died for the fatherland?

The stuff that always gets me is the comradeship of humans or soldiers in trouble… some idiots declared war and the simple man suffers. But fraternisation and humanity will find their way into the hearts of the darkest wars…
I hope we won’t lose our deep-rooted empathy for humans or other creatures ever…

I find this phrase, “they died for their fatherland,” deeply disgusting.
They died for the vanity of their military leaders and the unchallenged imperial ambitions of their rulers.

It’s a shame that dignity wasn’t reciprocated when the war was over. Langemark, while nice, is disturbing with close examination and due to the context of Versailles.
Not a single one of those graves has less than 5 people in it; so many mass graves crammed into such a small place and the pettiness of the decor- “no you’re not allowed to put flowers at your son’s grave.”
