I mean things have only kind of changed.
You’re allowed to like the *right* anime. Say your into certain things in the wrong crowd and you’re still gonna get strange looks.

I was a kid during the mid to late 2000s and early 2010s, and from what I remember, most people liked anime with the big one being Naruto. Teen Titans, while not made in Japan, was also mega popular in part due to its anime inspired style.
Cartoon Network made anime cool by simply broadcasting it.

This still largely depends on which age group you are talking about.

not only anime but also transfem people feel like a bit too overrepresentated these days(compared to the actual percentage)
I find this so funny. When I first got into anime, I hid it from all my friends and family for exactly this reason. It’s now 2025 and I still hide it from all my friends and family because, at this point, the fact that I hid it for so long is more embarrassing than what I was hiding to begin with.
Part of me misses the days when it wasn’t “accepted” like it is today.
